ad infinitum

/ˌˈæ ˈdɪnfəˌnaɪdəm/
IPA guide

The adverb ad infinitum is a useful way to describe something that goes on forever, like a child attempting to count to a million.

You can talk about something that is literally infinite using ad infinitum: "The universe goes on ad infinitum." A more figurative use is for things that only seem to last ad infinitum, like the song "Ninety-nine Bottles of Beer on the Wall," or an incredibly boring graduation speech. The literal meaning of the Latin ad infinitum is "to infinity."
